The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Roberts Children’s Health is a 434-foot-tall, 26-story new patient tower in Philadelphia, PA. Designed by Ballinger, with ZGF Architects as the consultant and interiors/clinical architects, the 1.4 million-square-foot facility will provide around 480 patient beds and a variety of medical services. The building will not only allow the hospital to become a private bed institution to enhance the care experience, but it will give staff much needed space to collaborate and provide the most cutting-edge care. In addition, the project will allow flexibility throughout the campus and allow CHOP to meet all healthcare needs while being responsive to ever-changing technology.

The tower's geometry is attributed to a chamfered floor plan with single-curved corners throughout the facade at each of the three wall types. The primary wall type is a unitized system with many distinct features such as an alternating facade modulation of an 8'-4" and 3' unit width. Additionally, there is an alternating vision to opaque glazing rhythm with both flat and chamfered shadowboxes at the opaque areas. The most prominent feature are polished stainless steel clad bull-nose profiles proud of the louver assemblies at the mechanical floor levels. The Architect has described their intent as blending the highly reflective glass with a material to mask the louvers that reflects the sky in a similar manner. The vertical frit pattern along the slab-edge shadowboxes provides a consistent treatment unifying these numerous features. At the podium level, the second unitized system is much smaller in facade area; however, the system creates a unique peel-away condition at the facade. The "Swoops" at the podium are recognizable color bands consisting of formed aluminum projections tracking around the slab-edge perimeter in reference and homage to the neighboring Berger Building. The final wall type system Heintges consulted on consists of glass fin supported storefront and vestibule at the lobby. The lobby is toggle glazed system that utilizes glazing adapters which are shop structurally glazed to the laminated structural glass fins.

The project integrates sustainability into the design with the goal of LEED Silver certification, and will open to patients in early 2028.
