Founded more than 150 years ago, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is one of the world’s premier veterinary schools. In an update to match the school's dedication to leadership in the field, Weiss / Manfredi undertook a renovation and expansion of its existing, disconnected buildings, demolishing some and transforming what remained into a new unified presence for the College of Veterinary Medicine. The project involved recladding of existing buildings and incorporating an entirely new building into the overall plan.

The main buildings, whose forms helps frame an outdoor commons, are characterized by minimalist glass curtain walls expressing clean lines and material transparency. Central to the new design are generous amenity spaces, including a multi-level atrium and library. These provide students a much-neededhub—and a place to enjoy natural light, even during Ithica’s long winter.

The major curtain wall system comprises an insulated glass module, 4 feet wide, with spans varying with the building profile. To achieve a minimalist, jewel-box-like effect, the systems employ a tailored ‘shadow box’ design strategy to conceal the structural slabs and unify the facades.

The design makes use of both neutral and reflective glass. At ground level, a simple datum is formed by a band of neutral glass (72% light transmittance) and expresses—and reveals—the public spaces within. Fully neutral glass is also used at the back of the building, while reflective glass is applied for classrooms, labs, and offices for thermal performance and privacy.
