“We envision Glenstone not only as a place, but a state of mind created by the energy of architecture, the power of art, and the restorative qualities of nature.” Meeting this profound challenge in the mission of Emily and Mitch Rales, Thomas Phifer and Partners has crafted 204,000 sq. ft. of exhibition, contemplation, and administrative spaces: The Pavilions.
The facade of these Pavilions, nestled into 230 acres of bucolic landscape in Maryland, is designed to meet the tectonic goal of this legacy project, namely to construct a “100-year building”. This criteria was realized through the use of massive architectural precast blocks, individually-set, framing monumental insulated glazed openings, welcoming the surrounding landscape into the museum experience while providing a robust and high-performing enclosure. Heintges provided innovative design solutions as well as protocol for rigorous testing, ultimately allowing for both the removal of expansion joints in the block facade as well as the elimination of mullions in the glazed areas. The net effect serves the pure geometric expression of Thomas Phifer and Partners, allowing for the sublime continuity of surface and texture from any vantage.
Heintges provided building envelope and curtain wall consulting services during all phases of design and construction.
