Set directly across from Macau’s Nam Van Lake, the Gucci One Central store is the first full realization of Gucci’s new architectural concept. The design was driven by the lenticular optical effect produced by the glass mullions, an effect more subtly present in the fins of Gucci’s earlier Canton Road store in Hong Kong.
In Macau, the mullions are transformed into monumental, bi-color bronze-and-gold patterned glass surfaces, modulating the store’s appearance depending on the viewer’s standpoint: more subdued from the bronze side and more opulent from the gold side.
This optical effect is created by mullions consisting of low-iron ribbed glass lites that are laminated to multiple sheets of flat carrier glass, which is then structural silicone glazed to a concealed stainless steel armature. The mullions incorporate internal L.E.D.’s and polished gold reflectors to further enhance the luminosity of the facade at night.
