A joint venture between Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects and Davis Brody Bond, the U.S. Embassy complex in Mexico City was the first commissioned under the Excellence in Diplomatic Facilities program by the Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations. The design balances aesthetics, cost, constructability, and security. 

Rectangular building volumes are clad in randomly-patterned, hand-set stones. Bronze clad sun shading devices give dimension to the monumental facades and take their cues from traditional Mexican designs. These panels sit in front of the secure building envelope, including punched windows. All glazing for the complex meets blast resistance requirements. Several interior courtyards bring light and air to the interior of the complex.
