Sarah Oppenheimer’s P-131317 is located in the newly renovated Metcalf Building on Brown Univer-sity’scampus in Providence, Rhode Island. Oppenheimer, a contemporary artist, uses architectural interventions to examine how we perceive space.
P131317 is located at the courtyard entrance to Metcalf. By removing sections of the floor and in-stallingslanted mirrored glass, Oppenheimer has opened views between the basement level of the building and the outdoors, and created puzzling and disorienting illusions.
Heintges worked directly with Ms. Oppenheimer to realize her artistic vision. Our engineers designed the support system and structural glass assembly consisting of oversized laminated trapezoidal lites of glass capable of supporting several hundred pounds of load.
Heintges worked with the artist to select the appropriate reflective coatings available for glass of this size that satisfied budgetary constraints and met aesthetic criteria. Heintges also designed and orchestrated an extremely difficult installation sequence.
