Designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, the new Sisters of Saint Joseph Hospital in downtown Toronto, Ontario is  situated between the Don Valley ravine and a post-war residential neighborhood. The private healthcare facility includes assisted living units, dining facilities and a glass enclosed 

chapel overlooking the restored ravine landscape. 

The serpentine shape of the new building compliments the ravine landscape and the use of new modern materials - high gloss metal panels and corten steel - create a dynamic conversation with the rehabilitated 1850's heritage home maintained at the east end of the site. With a focus on integrated sustainability and maximizing daylighting, the Sisters of Saint Joseph project incorporates a high quality building envelope design featuring natural ventilation and exterior shading elements, geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels and solar hot water pre-heating, green roofs, rainwater cisterns and permeable pavers.
