Located along the southern edge of the Berger Family Lawn at Tulane University, The Commons provides a new center for student interaction and exchange, featuring a state-of-the-art dining facility. The building is also the new consolidated home for the Newcomb Institute – promoting educational programs in support of gender equity. Through circulation and open levels, Weiss / Manfredi’s design encourages seamless flow and exchange between students and faculty across academic disciplines.
The building enclosure reflects the movement and activity of The Commons through use of a standard stick system with varied glass types, attached to frames through use of pre-glazed four-sided structural silicone cassette system. Vision glass openings contrast with the vertically striped acid-etch and ceramic frit patterns along the quad-facing facade. Through use of standard and prefabricated systems, embracing the aqueous tint of standard clear base glass, and applying selective treatments, the facade was strategically designed to address solar control and environmental (hurricane) requirements within an accelerated schedule and conservative budget.
Heintges provided building envelope and curtain wall consulting services during all phases of design and construction.
