The Integrated Science Commons has transformed how departments, researchers and students collaborate at Vassar College. Previously scattered across the campus, the 157,000 sq. ft. two-storyBridge for Laboratory Sciences Building consolidated various scientific disciplines under one roof, featuring state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching and research laboratories. Additionally, the building physically connects the sciences with the surrounding wetlands, creating a connection between the campus and its natural environment.
With a curved design, the Bridge Building weaves through the wooded landscape, with its passageway serving as a central corridor for student activity while offering expansive views of nature.
The building's facade, composed of fiber cement and stone, is inspired by the surrounding landscape and incorporates innovative bird-friendly design features. These include a fritted glass curtainwall and one of the largest installations of Ornilux glass in the U.S., significantly reducing bird collisions.
Heintges provided building envelope consulting services during all phases of design and construction.
